In the south-west of Moldavia near the legendary Elbow of the South East Carpathians, grapes ripen in the sun of the Vrancea region, without doubt one of the most fertile and important areas for cultivation of the vine in Romania. Since ancient times it has been represented by Odobeşti and Coteşti vineyards, and last but not the least Panciu.

The earliest evidence of viniculture in what is now the city of Panciu dates from the late sixteenth century AD. On July 20th 1589, Prince Peter the Lame issued a royal warrant establishing the Governor of the Low Countries as the rightful owner of the „vineyards at The Cross belonging to His Majesty”.
